Do you have one of those bucket lists? You know..the wish list, the life list…whatever you want to call it.
I do. Only I don’t pay it all that much mind from day-to-day. I have big goals and things I’m working on and seem to get distracted by those dreams.
Still every time I notice my bucket list I get very emotional. These are real to me. Pinterest has made it loads of fun to create this list. I love visuals!
I started thinking about why I have this list if I don’t pay enough attention to it. What’s going on there?
Interestingly enough, I came up with a lot of excuses…or reasons? Nah..they were excuses.
Let’s see. A couple of favorites that came to play?
- there is only so much time in a day
- and just who is going to pay for all this?
- can’t just leave everything and go off like a nutter (yes you can, I’ve done it before! lol)
- what to do first?
I kept picking at this one and realized that while many things might take some planning and maybe won’t happen today; they also won’t happen ever if I don’t mind them and start making some steps towards them!
Okay, while it’s true I can’t do everything in one day I can certainly prioritize and start the process of getting things underway.
So what’s the problem? Well first of all I needed to work though these questions I think. Then it hit me…shoot. So much of this was fear talking one more time. Once I opened that
door, I could hear so much more of what my heart and soul were really saying. I heard things like “what if I never make it and all that planning and work amount to nothing? I think we know the answer to that…’so what?’ Some of it was just simply fear of moving forward to the unknown.
One of the biggest things I have on my list is travel, travel and more travel. I struggle with travelling alone since my car accident. I suppose that makes sense BUT it won’t get me to those experiences. Time to figure out some things around that! I don’t want my list to be just wishes in the wind.
So, how often do you plan for things on your bucket list? How or what do you do to make the dreams come down to reality? I’d love to know how you handle this!

I don’t have an official bucket list but I have a few items in mind. Travel has always been at the top of the list so I’ve made an effort to travel more often. A friend of mine used to say that she wasn’t spending money on travel…she was building memories. Good food for thought.
It’s frustrating when people say that when they have more money or when they have more time they’ll do something special or tackle their bucket list. Time is precious and if we don’t tackle the list or at least make an effort, it could be too late. Thanks for the reminder to create and focus on a bucket list.
I don’t have a written bucket list but it is something that I have thought about. Thanks for inspiring me to get started.
Nice post. Like many people, I’ve had a mental bucket list for a long time. Then, a while back, I actually committed it to paper (which somehow made it feel more real than typing it on a computer). One of the things was a very generic “college degree”, which I had put off for a long, long time. I’d become unexpectedly unemployed earlier this year, and it dawned on me that this is the time. I’m starting with an associates degree, as it seems doable in a reasonable amount of time (and within my budget!); the semester begins tomorrow.
Thanks for reminding me that I shouldn’t forget the rest of my list just because I’m working on part of it.
I always thought I had a bucket list, but never acted on it. You’ve inspired me to set some of those things down and commit to doing them sooner rather than later. You’d think grief would teach that, but all it seems to do is put one in a position from which it’s near impossible to learn anything. Love this post, going to have to acquaint myself better with your writings.
Take care,
Casey
I’m sitting here going – bucket list – one day at a time, spontaneous vs planned, must do vs want to do….LIVE today for sure
Living in the moment is a beautiful way to be Roberta. I highly reccomend it but sometimes we need to do a bit of planning to make things happen that we only dream about today. You can have both don’t you think?
I have travel, studies and more writing on my bucket list. I am doing the study part (begin college next month) Here’s hoping I work things out to get to the other things quick!
Ah Hajra! Studies are so wonderful. Knowledge gets us places to and who know what it will lead to if you let your open heart lead the way. Can’t wait to hear how you’re doing with it over time.
I think one should review a bucket list at least monthly. And, there should be concrete plans to wipe something off that list each month- and that does not mean getting there sometime, but soon. There is no reason to wait until one is 89 to complete the bucket list- especially since there is no guarantee you will be here tomorrow!
Absolutely Roy! Not waiting til your last breath is upon you is my point. A bucket full of dreams are simply waiting to be made reality and today is a the perfect time to start.
